Girl, 10, First to Diagnose Her Autism After Reading a Children's Book About it

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Rosie King, 10, correctly diagnosed a mild form of the rare autistic disorder that she has, known as Asperger's Syndrome. The epiphany came while reading Little Rain Man, a children's book given to her so she could understand her brother's condition.

Her mother Sharon said, "We were reading the book together, and when it came to a section on Asperger's Rosie blurted out 'I think this might be me'. We always knew Lenny was autistic, since he was diagnosed when he was really young."

Rosie also has an 8-year-old sister named Daisy, who has a developmental disorder called Kabuki syndrome.

Rosie's disorder can cause emotional and communication problems, so after her official diagnosis she saw speech and behavioral therapists.
